ASSISTANT PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATOR (SPANISH-SPEAKING)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves assisting the Public Health Educator in the organization and implementation of educational efforts regarding public health needs. Responsibilities include assisting with surveying public health education needs as well as organizing workshops, forums and discussion groups to meet those needs. Additional duties include assisting in planning and implementing educational programs for the general population and specially targeted populations. This position differs from Public Health Educator in that it is an entry level professional position. Direct supervision is received from the Public Health Educator/Supervising Public Health Educator. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Translates from English to Spanish and Spanish to English, in writing and orally as needed;
- Assists in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of in-services, trainings, seminars, and other presentations for community members and professionals for the purpose of imparting knowledge of health improvements, and improve health outcomes County wide;
- Assists in the organization and implementation of efforts to influence public attitudes and behavior with regard to given health needs
- Distributes health educational materials including curricula, pamphlets, posters, exhibits, and audio-visual presentation material;
- Participates in community health assessment and community health improvement plan related activities;
- Prepares reports of activities and participates in staff and health education meetings;
- Participates in, and represents the County at, meetings of public health coalitions and other community organizations, as assigned;
- Participates in the planning of, and represents the County at community events such as health fairs and expos;
- Participates in departmental and health education meetings;
- May organize training programs for first responders, investigating officials, etc., relative to specific health issues, as assigned;
- Responds to health-related information requests from the public, as needed;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge in speaking, writing, reading, understanding and translating Spanish.; Working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of public health education; working knowledge of community organization work; working knowledge of epidemiology, data collection and behavioral and attitudinal surveys; ability to plan, advertise and assist with conducting of educational seminars and workshops; ability to survey public health education needs; ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing with groups and individuals; ability to establish and maintain effective relations with community agencies; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to deal effectively and objectively with clients and community groups of diverse socio-economic backgrounds and cultures; good listening skills; social perceptiveness; sound judgment; initiative; resourcefulness, courteousness, tact.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- An associates degree or higher in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, or health communications from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university; or
- An associates degree or higher in education, nursing, epidemiology, wellness and fitness, or nutrition from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university and (one) 1 year experience in health education; or
- An associates degree or higher in marketing, human services, social work or psychology from a regionally accredited or New York State-registered college or university and two (2) years experience in health education
PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Candidates must be fluent in understanding, speaking, reading, writing and translating Spanish.
- Possession of a valid unrestricted appropriate level driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- A local public health educator must satisfactorily complete 15 hours of continuing education in health education related topics approved by the New York State Health Department within one (1) year of appointment.
