The County Clerk serves as the local Agent/Commissioner for the Department of Motor Vehicles for Putnam County.

The Putnam County DMV Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am through 4:00pm. Our office is closed from 12:30 pm through 1:30 pm. Transactions, excluding plate surrenders and dealer/PSB drop-offs, are by APPOINTMENT ONLY. We also offer an after-hours drop box for your convenience.

Dealer and PSB Transactions are drop off only. These transactions may be delivered to our lobby window, through the use of our after-hours drop box, or through the mail.

License Plate Surrender

You do not need an appointment to surrender license plates at our DMV. You can visit our lobby window to surrender your license plates for a $1.00 processing fee. You can also use our after-hours drop box to deliver the plate surrender. If you use our after-hours drop box, please make sure to include your name, address, and the $1.00 processing fee.

After-hours Drop Box

Did you know that we have an after-hours drop box located at our Brewster DMV? You can take advantage of this service for any registration renewals, plate surrenders, or transactions that can be completed without the need to come into the office. Simply deposit the transaction, along with your contact information in the drop box and we will process it the next business day.

Do I need an appointment to visit the Brewster DMV and how can I make the appointment?
Yes. We are open by open by appointment only and for limited in-office transactions at this time.

What forms do I need in order to register a vehicle?

In order to register a vehicle, you will need an MV-82, Bill of Sale, Copy of driver’s license, sales tax form (DTF-802), Copy of the insurance card for the vehicle.
