CHIEF SIGN MAINTENANCE WORKER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves responsibility for the coordination of activities involving road sign fabrication, design, painting and proper placement. Duties also include leading work, while fully participating in installation, repair, and erection of road and traffic signs. Work is performed under general supervision of the Supervisor of Maintenance and Construction or other higher-level employee, with leeway allowed for independent judgment in scheduling sign installation. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Provides for the design, fabrication and placement of road signs for County and Town roads;
- Leads and/or participates in the erection of road signs to be sure they meet with New York State's standards for placement and heights of signs;
- Constructs road signs from both metal and wooden blanks;
- Consults with municipal officials as to road sign plans and needs;
- Researches accident sites to ascertain whether a sign is warranted;
- Checks existing road signs already in place for damage, and recommends replacement if needed;
- Maintains accurate sign records;
- Solicits price quotations and prepares requisitions for purchases of supplies;
- Receives input from municipalities and general public regarding sign problems;
- Operates or assists in the operation of snow and ice control equipment.
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of modern techniques as applied to the design and fabrication of road signs; good knowledge of the modern methods, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; good knowledge of methods and practices for ordering, storing, maintaining, and issuing supplies; skill in the fabrication of signs; ability to understand and follow applicable New York State and local laws pertaining to sign construction and placement; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to perform simple computations; good judgment; tact; accuracy; courtesy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Three (3) years of experience in traffic sign design, fabrication and placement for public roads and highways.
PLEASE NOTE: Labor work only in the placement of signs will not be qualifying by itself—sign design and fabrication experience is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
