CORONER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Coroners make inquiries into unnatural deaths within the County as prescribed by law. The Coroners shall have all the powers and duties and shall be subject to all the obligations and liabilities lawfully granted or imposed by applicable laws and rules. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
Investigates the death of persons within the county, or whose body is found within the county, which is or appears to be:
- A violent death, whether by criminal violence, suicide, or casualty;
- A death caused by unlawful act or criminal neglect;
- A death occurring in a suspicious, unusual or unexplained manner;
- A death caused by suspected criminal abortion;
- A death while unattended by a physician, so far as can be discovered, or where no physician able to certify the cause of death as provided in the Public Health Law and in the form as prescribed by the Commissioner of Health can be found;
- A death of a person confined to a public institution other than a hospital, nursing home or infirmary;
Arranges for autopsies to be performed;
Prepares and submits all reports required by applicable laws;
Disposes of money and other personal property found on a dead body as prescribed by applicable laws;
Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of applicable state and local laws and requirements for the investigation of violent, suspicious or unnatural deaths which occur in the county; thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine; ability to prepare required reports clearly and accurately; conscientiousness and thoroughness; interest in maintaining a high standard of professional ethics; good professional judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: These are elective positions for terms of four (4) years.
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT*: As an elected official and a public officer, the holder of this position must be a United States citizen, a resident of Putnam County, and maintain residency for the duration of employment.

Mission Statement
