CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR (DISTRICT ATTORNEY)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is technical criminal investigation work of a moderately difficult and complex nature which involves selection of appropriate methods and resources when making inquiries and in establishing and correlating facts concerning complaints, suspected or committed crimes. The incumbent of this position secures and reports facts and information by interview, observation and investigation. The essential purpose of such investigations is the accumulation of valid evidence to assist in the legal work of the District Attorney’s office. There is considerable independence in planning investigations and investigating procedures. Incumbents are police officers as defined by Criminal Procedure Law Article 1, §20(34)(g). Direct supervision is received from either the District Attorney or the Chief Assistant District Attorney. Work requires the incumbent to be on call nights and weekends. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Conducts field investigations of all major crimes committed in the County including murders, robberies, aggravated felonious assaults, rapes, etc.;
- Conducts field investigations of gambling, narcotic and extortion cases;
- Interviews suspects, witnesses and complainants in an effort to obtain relevant information relating to the investigation and offenses against the law;
- Evaluates information gathered and makes conclusions based upon it;
- Prepares evidence and interviews witnesses for Grand Jury presentments and County court trials;
- Prepares reports and testifies in local, Superior and Federal Courts regarding the investigations conducted and evidence collected;
- Conducts field and in-office investigations of fraud cases;
- Conducts investigations involving public officials, officers or their employees in the course of their public functions;
- Works with other law enforcement agencies (ie., Federal, State, Local) regarding investigations;
- Compiles and maintains a variety of written factual reports and records in order to document activities and retain information useful in future and/or continuing investigations;
- Prepares daily and case progress reports;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of criminal investigation techniques and proceedings; thorough knowledge of the laws of arrest; good knowledge of rules of evidence and court proceedings; working knowledge of New York State asset forfeiture procedures; ability to organize and conduct routine criminal investigations; ability to prepare and present precise written and verbal reports; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with law enforcement agencies; ability to deal with people effectively; skill in the use of firearms; sound judgment and keen powers of observation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Qualifications are determined by the District Attorney.
