GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM AIDE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is entry level technical work that involves working with geographic information systems (GIS), assisting professional staff in the design and production of maps (hardcopy and digital), online publications, graphics, and a variety of other documents. Responsibilities involve collecting and maintaining datasets, reviewing source data from municipal agencies, and assembling and preparing data in support of department functions and special projects. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and under the general supervision of the Director of IT/GIS.  Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only)

  • Assists in the production and revision of all digital maps and assists in the development of geographic information system capabilities for department;
  • Assists in the design, creation and/or updating of a variety of web applications;
  • Assists in the digitizing of supplemental database related information to contribute additional geographic features and layers of data to the multi-purpose database;
  • Converts geographic data from hardcopy and electronic maps;
  • Assists in source data analysis and evaluation;
  • Creates and maintains records and reports;
  • Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments;
  • Performs other staff support services as required.
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTIC:  Working knowledge of the operations, principles and practices of a Geographic Information System and methods of application; working knowledge of cartographic principles and practices and its relationship to geographic information, system hardware and software; working knowledge of systems analysis; ability to communi­cate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish an effective working relationship with others; tact; courtesy; integrity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in computer science, planning, geography, architecture, survey­ing, visual/graphic arts or related field; or
  2. Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience working with computer graphics programs, computer assisted drafting or geographic information systems programs; or
  3. Associate's degree in computer science, planning, geography, architecture, survey­ing, visual/graphic arts or related field, and two (2) years of experience working with computer graphics programs, computer assisted drafting or geographic information systems programs; or
  4. An equivalent combination of training and experience, as indicated in a) and b) above.

PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
