HVAC MECHANIC
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a skilled technical service position in which the incumbent installs, repairs, maintains, and operates all HVAC, plumbing, controls, electrical, and related systems located in County-owned buildings to insure efficient and reliable operation. Supervision is not normally a function of this position, however supervision may be exercised over the work of others in the accomplishment of mechanical, plumbing, and/or control systems projects. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Master Mechanics with leeway allowed for independent judgment and decision making. The incumbent may direct the work of subordinate employees, while fully participating in the work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Services, installs and repairs air conditioning, heating, ventilation, pumping, and other related plumbing and mechanical equipment;
- Installs, repairs, and operates electrical controls and equipment, including but not limited to related generators, motors, pumps, batteries, relays and thermostats, ;
- Repairs steam, water, and refrigerant leaks on piping, valves, fittings, coils, etc.;
- Monitors Building Management Systems (BMS) controls, responds to alarms, and revises BMS control points as needed;
- Performs preventative maintenance on systems and mechanical equipment as required in order to track equipment efficiency and production, and avoid larger, costlier system failures, including changing filters and belts, greasing equipment, and cleaning components;
- Receives and investigates complaints concerning heating and ventilation;
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses system and equipment failures and creates a plan to resolve issues;
- Makes emergency repairs to equipment and takes emergency action in connection with equipment failure to insure reinstatement of serviceability;
- Operates electrical generating equipment;
- Evacuates and recharges refrigerant in HVAC equipment;
- Makes recommendations in the purchase of equipment and supplies;
- May work from building plans, blueprints, diagrams, drawings, and manuals to plan and lay out the placement, type and proper operation of equipment for renovations and new construction projects;
- May assist colleagues in performing general building maintenance and minor carpentry tasks;
- May be required to operate a motor vehicle in connection with assignments;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety procedures of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and related equipment; ability to repair and maintain heating, air conditioning equipment in a safe and efficient manner; ability to act quickly and efficiently in the event of a mechanical failure; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity; dependability; resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and either:
- HVAC Journeyman license and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC systems; or
- Five (5) years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC systems.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license, and acceptable driving record are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Mission Statement
