LEAD CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is skilled mechanical work involving the responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of complex motor driven construction equipment. Employees in this class are usually responsible for the maintenance of their equipment. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision is exercised over motor equipment operators and laborers.  Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Assists management with the set up of jobs, ensuring all necessary equipment and material is available and on site;
  • Oversees workers on job sites including laborer’s, truck drivers, and sub-contractors;
  • Provides job progress updates to higher ranking workers including Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Engineering Supervisor;
  • Assists with any problems or issues that may arise on a job site;
  • Oversees snow and ice removal;
  • Coordinates with work crews to ensure roads are opened in a timely and safe manner following major storms;
  • Coordinates crews and assists with emergency storm repair including bridge and road repair;
  • Works with management in the purchasing and procurement of equipment and tools;
  • Operates a grader in scraping, leveling and construction tasks;
  • Operates a power shovel in general excavation and fill work for highways, bridge approaches and culverts;
  • Operates a bulldozer in cutting and filling ditches and related construction work;
  • Operates a grader in cleaning out and digging ditches to place culverts;
  • Operates graders, backhoes, pavers and sweepers in maintaining roads;
  • Performs minor repair and maintenance work on construction equipment;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex construction equipment; good knowledge of the safety precautions in the operation of construction equipment; ability to supervise others; ability to manage a construction and/or road crew, ability to make independent decisions, ability to service and make minor repairs to construction equipment; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; manual dexterity; mechanical aptitude; dependability, leadership, good judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five (5) years of experience in the operation of automotive equipment, three (3) years of which shall have been in the operation of complex construction equipment. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
