LEAD DIESEL MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving responsibility for the maintenance and repair of a variety of diesel/gas engines and heavy duty equipment such as bulldozers, graders, trucks and other road maintenance and construction equipment. Responsibilities include but are not limited to leading and participating in the repair and maintenance of diesel/gas equipment and vehicles, as well as diagnosing problems on a variety of diesel/gas equipment. Work is performed under general supervision of the Chief Mechanic. Supervision of others is a responsibility. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Leads and participates in repairing, maintaining and/or overhauling diesel and gas standard and specialized vehicles including dump trucks, snow removal equipment, construction equipment, sweepers, and a variety of specialty equipment including engines, brakes, transmissions, springs, rear-end and front loaders, hydraulics, fuel systems, air systems and air leaks.
  • Leads and participates in troubleshooting, analyzing and diagnosing problems in a variety of vehicles including automobiles, trucks, tractors, snow equipment, hydraulic operated pumps, small engine equipment and other equipment including computer controlled equipment, as necessary;
  • Leads and participates in responding to road-service calls in a timely manner, and servicing and repairing disabled vehicles and equipment promptly;
  • Uses specialized hand and power tools to make and complete repairs including welding and fabrication tools and materials;
  • Operates electric and/or acetylene welding and cutting equipment;
  • Assists in maintaining inventory and equipment records;
  • Assists in preparing reports and other documents, as needed;
  • Requisitions parts, supplies, tools, equipment and other items as directed;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Thorough knowledge of construction, design and repair of conventional and specialized light, medium and heavy automotive equipment, including gas and diesel engines; thorough knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, as well as hydraulic, electric, vacuum, and compressed air components; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the trade; good knowledge of standard and specialized repair tools, materials, methods and terminology of the trade; ability to troubleshoot or detect defective or improperly adjusted components in automotive equipment including computer controlled equipment; ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and automotive diagrams; ability to work from plans and specifications; ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions; ability to manage and oversee the work of others; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports; skill in the use and operation of standard and specialized tools and materials; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and ten (10) years of journey level experience in repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive, hydraulic, computerized diesel and gas engines and heavy duty equipment, five (5) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity with responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the work of other mechanics.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  2. Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Inspector's certificate with authorization to conduct Group 1 inspections, within six (6) months of appointment.
