LIBRARIAN I (YOUTH SERVICES)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is entry level professional work involving responsibility for basic librarian duties. Work is performed under the supervision of professional librarians in higher level positions. Work becomes progressively more difficult as experience in the field broadens. Supervision may be exercised over lower-level library support staff and volunteers. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to children and young adults, including online database searches;
  • Selects and orders books, serials, realia, cassettes, etc., for children and young adult fiction and non-fiction collections;
  • Withdraws material from collection;
  • Keeps statistical figures of additions/withdrawals to collection;
  • Processes new material including covering, labeling, color coding, typing cards and pockets and card catalog cards as appropriate;
  • Conducts story times, class visits, library tours, book talks and other programs for children and young adults, including selection of books, preparation of related handouts and other materials for program participants;
  • Develops and implements programs of interest to children and young adults;
  • Prepares library displays to promote library programs, seasonal events, topics of interest, etc. in the children’s and young adult areas of the library;
  • Prepares seasonal calendar describing programs available, which includes preparing press releases, posters, etc., announcing the event;
  • Prepares statistical and/or narrative reports, memoranda, and correspondence relative to children’s and young adult services and programs;
  • Keeps informed of professional developments through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education, etc.;
  • May assist in research and preparation of grant proposals, grant applications and related forms;
  • May recruit and/or supervise volunteers in the youth services department;
  • May recommend authors, poets, and entertainers for youth services programs;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of library science; good knowledge of online database systems; good knowledge of bibliographic tools and sources; good knowledge of library materials and collection issues for a specific subject area if functioning as a subject specialist; good knowledge of modern library organizations, procedures, policies, aims, and services; skill and accuracy in the performance of technical library tasks; ability to perform as a team member in the planning and implementation of automation or other library programs; ability to think critically to understand the needs of library patrons and groups and to prescribe information or materials accordingly; ability to carry out library policies and procedures; ability to read and comprehend library literature and research; ability to express ideas clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to groups and individuals; ability to plan and direct the work of others; tact and courtesy in dealing with staff and public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS*:        

One (1) year of experience working with children and/or young adults in recreational, youth, park service, cultural or educational enrichment activities and either:

  1. Graduate library degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department, or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association; or
  2. A conditional certificate and have completed at least six graduate credits in library science from a library school program which has been accredited by the American Library Association or registered by the State Education department, and two (2) years of satisfactory professional experience in a public library located within the United States.

PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a New York State public librarian's professional certificate at time of appointment.
