MAINTENANCE PLUMBER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves a wide variety of licensed plumbing work, with responsibility for working independently on assignments, initiated by oral instructions or written work orders. Ability to work from blueprints or rough sketches is necessary, with some technical supervision provided by engineering personnel relative to more complex jobs. Work is performed under general supervision of the Commissioner of Highways and Facilities. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, water and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes;
- Repairs and replaces pipes, valves and fittings for high and low pressure steam, gas and liquid flow systems;
- Inspects structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structures resulting from installation of pipes;
- Installs and repairs wash stands, toilets showers, drains, sinks and other equipment requiring plumbing and steam connections;
- Locates and marks positions of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors, using ruler, spirit level and plumbbob;
- Cuts, threads, bends and fits pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch and pipe threading machine;
- Repairs and replaces parts for pumps and associated pumping equipment;
- Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings and pipes composed of metals and nonmetals using hand tools and power tools;
- Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints;
- Tests and tightens joints;
- Performs maintenance and repairs of heating, water and drainage systems;
- Taps liquid and gas mains for connections, as required;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade; good knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; familiarity with the applicable provisions of the state codes and such local codes as apply to the trade; ability to carry out the various specialized plumbing techniques with a high degree of skill; ability to work with a variety of piping systems including high and low pressure steam, water, gas, etc.; ability to read blueprints and rough sketches; ability to coordinate work with the work of other trades; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to get along well with others; resourcefulness in work performance; initiative in successfully completing assigned work; dependability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Journeyman plumber with one (1) years’ experience or;
- Five (5) years’ experience as a plumber
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of license as Journeyman Plumber issued by the Putnam County Plumbing Board or other acceptable authority within six (6) months of appointment.
