MAINTENANCE WELDER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving responsibility for the efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of welding tasks. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed permitting considerable leeway in planning the details of each assignment. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Welds bumpers, fenders, and motor and gear casings;
- Repairs broken parts of trucks, cars, graders, mowers, etc.;
- Reinforces weak spots in machinery and apparatus;
- Welds gasoline tanks, platforms and machinery;
- Rebuilds and replaces broken frames on equipment;
- Dismantles and reassembles equipment to be welded;
- Tempers and sharpens tool bits, picks and shovels;
- May operate a motor vehicle with snow plow, sander and other attachments in the removal of snow and ice;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex construction equipment; ability to do brazing and welding with acetylene or electric equipment; ability to work from plans, specifications and oral instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years of experience as a welder at journeyman level.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
