OUTREACH WORKER I (SCHOOL)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Under general supervision, incumbents of this class perform community outreach work for an assigned school district. Incumbents provide information and referral to district students and families about programs and services available to them. Considerable contact and interaction with school administrators, teachers, school personnel, students and parents are involved, requiring confidentiality and proper handling of confidential materials. Supervision of others is not a requirement of this position. Performs related work as required. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES  (Illustrative only)

  • Interprets program services and makes referrals to district residents and students to internal and external programs, services, and resources available to them;
  • Distributes informational materials to district residents;
  • Acts as liaison between building administration and families;
  • Helps arrange appointments for residents with school staff and outside agencies;
  • Gathers community data;
  • May travel to student homes and/or school buildings to deliver program information, student work and/or supplies;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and one (1) year of general work experience involving contact with members of a community.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Access to transportation may be required to complete possible field work assignments in a timely and efficient manner.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICTS:

In accordance with the Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) legislation, Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, candidates for appointment in school districts must obtain clearance for employment from the State Education Department prior to employment based upon a fingerprint and criminal history background check.

Mission Statement
