RADIO SYSTEMS ASSISTANT
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a technical position with overall responsibility for the maintenance and operation of radio and telecommunications equipment and systems. This position ensures that all equipment and software are functional and running properly at all times. This position involves considerable contact and interaction with County department officials and staff. Incumbent may also provide basic training to system users in groups or one-on-one, as needed. Work is performed under general supervision of higher-level IT/GIS Department staff. Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. Performs related duties as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Coordinates with and advises County departments, agencies, and municipalities regarding radio and telecommunications systems requirements, technical problems, and utilization;
- Conducts test and performs inspections of systems and equipment to detect errors and ensure efficient operation;
- Maintains, programs, and distributes all radio and telecommunications equipment;
- Provides training to County departments, agencies, and municipalities on emergency radio and telecommunications programs and equipment;
- Schedules and attends interagency operational meetings;
- Assists in the coordination of comprehensive communications plans for all users;
- Conducts site visits to and maintains emergency radio tower sites and facilities to ensure effective operation;
- Maintains inventory of all emergency radio and telecommunications equipment;
- Works with contract and vendor supplied personnel engaged in the installation, maintenance and repair of server software and hardware, as necessary;
- Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments;
- Performs related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of various types of mobile radio communications equipment and the techniques and terminology employed in their operation; good knowledge of the maintenance and repair of radio communications equipment; good knowledge of the needs and requirements of public safety radio system users; ability to learn operations and procedures of dispatching center in order to identify needs and design; ability to install, configure, maintain, repair and upgrade a variety of radio communications system hardware and software; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to express ideas clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; technical aptitude.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Associate’s degree or higher and one (1) year of experience operating and maintaining public safety radio communications equipment, or providing technical support of a public safety emergency services dispatch system; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma, and three (3) years of experience as described above; or
- Five (5) years of experience as described above; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in (a), (b) and (c) above.
