SENIOR LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS This is professional engineering work involving exercise of engineering judgment in the design and administration of projects. Responsibilities include overseeing all technical aspects of engineering projects involving field survey and design, managing a variety of maintenance and construction projects in the field, and providing specific technical instruction and information to lower-level employees. Work is performed under supervision of the Supervisor of Planning and Design. Direct supervision is exercised over subordinate staff. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only)

  • Participates in the preparation, review and revision of plans, specifications and design of proposed public works and facilities projects;
  • Plans and supervises the activities of employees engaged in design and drafting;
  • Makes suggestions and recommendations for long range projects and programs;
  • Confers, coordinates and cooperates with consultants, contractors and other interested individuals and groups in solving engineering problems and carrying out engineering activities;
  • Prepares reports, including cost estimates and schedules for planned or active projects;
  • Supervises and/or performs computer aided drafting;
  • Oversees the construction and/or repair of all county facilities, as appropriate;
  • Performs field measurements, surveying and construction layout;
  • Assists in the design of structural modifications and repairs to existing buildings;
  • Manages and prepares estimates of payments to contractors;
  • Oversees the construction and maintenance of all county highways and bridges, as appropriate;
  • Makes inspection of construction and maintenance projects, including material supplied for such projects, to comply with contract provisions, plans and specifications;
  • Coordinates and supervises activities of construction crews;
  • Advises, instructs and supervises others in carrying out difficult engineering activities;
  • Performs a wide variety of field and office activities requiring skill in the application of engineering practices, principles and theories;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering; thorough knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction and maintenance of public works projects; skill in the use of surveying and drafting instruments; skill in the use of computer aided drafting (CAD) computer programs and related software; ability to conduct engineering research and solve complex engineering problems; ability to design major engineering projects and to prepare engineering plans and specifi­cations; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to provide technical advice and instruction to lower level technical employees; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; good professional judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a New York State Professional Engineer License with current registration and four (4) years of professional engineering experience where the primary function of the position was in Civil Engineering*.

PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.

 

*Engineering experience in the site development (conceptual layout of a site and the preparation of a site of design and construction), design, and construction of: roadways, stormwater treatment and drainage facilities, building structures in compliance with Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Codes, site utilities in compliance with Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Codes (including potable water treatment and distribution systems, wastewater collection and treatment systems, electrical distribution systems, and/or communications systems), bridges, and parks or recreation facilities.
