SENIOR PARK RANGER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves responsibility for the oversight of the day-to-day use and operations of county park facilities, while encouraging greater public safety, enjoyment and compliance with park rules and regulations. Responsibilities include the coordination of various types of maintenance work in connection with the upkeep of park grounds, park and recreations equipment, and parks and recreational facilities and/or buildings. Senior Park Ranger duties involve high public visibility in providing assistance and information to the general public in the use of County Park Facilities. Work is performed under general supervision of a Park Superintendent. Supervision is provided over the work of a number of Parks employees, including Laborers, Park Rangers, seasonal and/or hourly employees who patrol various sites within the Parks system. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of county park facilities;
- Promotes safe park use by observing and reporting unusual or illegal incidents, directing traffic, crowd control at special events, reporting hazardous conditions, assisting lost persons, making security inspections of buildings and grounds, etc.:
- Provides the public with general information on park activities, services and facilities;
- Receives and addresses complaints pertaining to the park as they arise;
- Reports hazardous conditions to Park Superintendent and coordinates response;
- Coordinates and participates in the inspection and maintenance of parks facilities, trails, water features, equipment, boundary marking, to ensure clean and safe conditions;
- Patrols and inspects the park to guard against vandalism and destruction;
- Leads and participates in the removal of potentially unsafe conditions (snow, ice, trees, etc.) to ensure public safety;
- Assists in administration of first aid and contact of emergency personnel in case of accidents;
- Supervises, trains and directs the work of Parks Department staff, including Laborers, seasonal and/or hourly employees;
- Operates a variety of motor equipment in connection with maintenance and repair duties;
- Assists in other park operations;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONNEL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of rules, regulations, and safety practices relating to park facilities; good knowledge of general maintenance and repair practices related to park and beach maintenance activities; good knowledge of basic law enforcement methods and techniques; good knowledge of first aid procedures; good knowledge of environmental and natural resources, their conservation and protection; good knowledge of power tools and equipment; ability to provide leadership and interact positively with the public; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to act quickly and calmly in emergencies; ability to supervise, organize and direct the work of others; ability to prepare written reports; resourcefulness; initiative; integrity; dependability; tact and courtesy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Bachelors degree or higher in environmental studies, recreation, natural sciences or related field and three (3) years of experience involving recreation leadership, first aid and rescue operations, enforcement of laws or rules, environmental maintenance or administration, or related experience; or
- Associates degree or completion of two (2) years of post secondary level education in environmental studies, recreation, natural sciences or related field and five (5) years of experience involving recreation leadership, first aid and rescue operations, enforcement of laws or rules, environmental maintenance or administration, or related experience; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and seven (7) years of experience involving recreation leadership, first aid and rescue operations, enforcement of laws or rules, environmental maintenance or administration, or related experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in a) and b) above.
PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
SUBSTITUTION NOTE: Military service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America may be substituted for the above-described education and/or experience on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license, and acceptable driving record are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
