VOTING MACHINE TECHNICIAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is semi-skilled technical work involving adjustment, maintenance and repair of voting machines utilized throughout the County. Work is performed under direction of the Commissioner of Elections. Work is performed in accordance with standard voting machine maintenance and repair practices and general work instructions. Supervision is not required in this position. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Inspects voting machines prior to and returned after election for proper operation and functioning;
- Inspects, maintains and repairs voting machines for proper installation of pins, bars, compensators and locking devices on voting machines;
- Tests machines for proper operation;
- Inspects voting machines to insure that the numbers registered on the public and candidate counters from the previous election have been cleared to zero;
- Prepares sample voting machine setups for election districts;
- Checks ballot labels received from printers to insure proper listing of candidates for accuracy;
- Repairs and adjusts malfunctioning voting machines at polling places on election day as required;
- Reports any unusual events during an election or following an election to the Commissioner of Elections;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles covering the operation of electrical and/or mechanical voting machines; good knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in the maintenance, adjustment and repair of electrical and/or mechanical voting machines; working knowledge of the election laws of the State of New York, especially as they relate to the conduct of elections; working knowledge of the voting districts throughout the County; ability to maintain, adjust and repair electrical and/or mechanical voting machines; ability to follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude; dependability; initiative; manual dexterity; a high ethical standard.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma; or
- Three (3) years of manual work experience, one (1) year of which shall have been in the maintenance and repair of machinery; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience as indicated in a) and b) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Access to transportation may be required to complete possible field work assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
