Putnam History Museum & Southeast Museum Opens Revolutionary Visions: Women in the Hudson Highlands During the American Revolution

Women in the Hudson Highlands During the American Revolution

Cold Spring, NY – The Putnam History Museum announces the opening of Revolutionary Visions: Women in the Hudson Highlands during the American Revolution on Friday, October 18th, 5 pm – 7 pm. This new exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Southeast Museum and with support from the Putnam Arts Council, explores the diverse roles women fulfilled during the American Revolutionary War.

The exhibition combines historical prints and maps with contemporary commissioned works by local artists, including Renée Kilbride Edelman, Michael Keropian, Robyn Oakes, Cassandra Saulter, and Lisa Weinblatt. By placing these works together in conversation, the exhibition aims to connect the modern viewer with the experiences of women from various social classes, races, and allegiances during the Revolutionary War period. Visitors will have the opportunity to reflect on how these women navigated the turmoil of war and contributed to shaping the emerging nation.

“The commissioned works breathe new life into the incredible stories of these women, encouraging us to reflect on their courage, challenges, resourcefulness, and determination,” said Cassie Ward, Executive Director of the Putnam History Museum.

An opening reception will be held from 5 PM to 7 PM at the Putnam History Museum, located at 63 Chestnut Street, Cold Spring, NY. Admission is free, but advance registration is requested. Revolutionary Visions will be on display at PHM through December 15th before traveling to the Southeast Museum in Brewster, NY.

This project is supported by the Putnam Art Council’s Arts Link Grant Program with public funds provided through the NY State Council on the Arts with support from the Office of the Governor and the NY State Legislature.
