AUTOMOTIVE BODY MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled, journeyman level automotive body repair work, involving responsibility for repair of damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers and graders. Responsibilities also include ensuring mechanical efficiency and safety of automotive equipment by repairing and overhauling vehicles when needed, in addition to performing repair work which may require welding. This position differs from Automotive Mechanic due to additional duties of automotive body repair requiring skilled welding. Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level mechanic or supervisor, with considerable leeway allowed for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Automotive Mechanic Helpers. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES          (Illustrative only)

  • Performs skilled operations in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel motor equipment including trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers and power shovels;
  • Repairs or replaces water pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors and shock absorbers;
  • Repairs or overhauls ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and axles;
  • Repairs and maintains auxiliary equipment on trucks, graders and rollers;
  • Repairs damaged automotive body parts;
  • Repairs or replaces defective mechanical parts;
  • Fills depressions with bodyfiller, using putty knife;
  • Removes damaged fenders, panels and grills, using wrenches and cutting torch, and bolts or welds replacement parts in position, using wrenches or welding equipment;
  • Files, grinds and sands repaired surfaces;
  • Refinishes repaired surfaces, using paint spray gun and sander;
  • Assembles and times engines;
  • Mounts and detaches snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
  • Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
  • Straightens frames and fenders;
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • May operate electric or acetylene welding and cutting equipment;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Thorough knowledge of automotive repair practices, methods, tools and terminology; good knowledge of the machinist trade and welding techniques; good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment and safety precautions used in the painting of automotive and construction motor equipment, ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to work from plans, rough drafts and specifications; ability to lay out and supervise the work of others; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years of satisfactory journeyman experience in automotive mechanic/automotive body repair which involved welding.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required within six (6) months of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
