LEAD CARPENTER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving the responsibility for the efficient, journey level performance of a variety of detailed and complex carpentry tasks, involving the exercise of independent judgment in the completion of work assignments. This position differs from Maintenance Carpenter II in the complexity and detail of the work performed. General supervision is provided by the Master Mechanic I and/or Master Mechanic II. General supervision is exercised over the work of laborers and other subordinate staff, while fully participating in the work. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Leads and participates in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, roofs, floors, and doors, including taping, insulating, sheetrocking and painting as necessary;
- Constructs and repairs bookshelves, cabinets, windows, desks, tables and other furniture;
- Leads and participates in the remodeling of existing rooms and closets;
- Leads and participates in the construction of building additions;
- Uses common hand or power-operated machines and tools;
- Builds and repairs forms for poured concrete structures such as bridges, retaining walls and headwalls;
- Builds and repairs wood work on concrete structures such as bridges, retaining walls and headwalls;
- Performs finish carpentry work in installing trim, molding, cabinetry, tile, etc.;
- Installs, repairs, and replaces plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, tubs, toilets, etc.;
- Performs minor electrical, and plumbing repairs and installations;
- Constructs and repairs signs and billboards;
- Builds and repairs sand boxes, barricades and guard rails;
- Installs, maintains and repairs locking systems, including combination locks and key cutting;
- Repairs benches, signs, fences and gates;
- Repairs window glass and cords and repairs window frames;
- May coordinate with outside contractors on various jobs;
- May operate a motor vehicle with snow plow, sander and other attachments in the removal of snow and ice;
- May assist with tree trimming, planting and wood cutting;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; thorough knowledge of allied trades, basic construction math, and estimation of time and material needs; thorough knowledge of local and state codes; ability to read and interpret a variety of blueprints, plans, diagrams, manufacturers’ manuals, specifications, as well as rough sketches; ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others; ability to rig and work from scaffolds; ability communicate effectively both orally and in writing; skill in the use of carpentry equipment, materials, and tools; strength and dexterity.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and either:
- Completion of a recognized apprentice-level carpentry-training program of four (4) years’ duration, and two (2) years of full-time, paid experience in carpentry at the journey-level; or
- Six (6) years of full-time, progressively more responsible, paid experience in carpentry under the supervision of a journey-level carpenter, two (2) years of which shall have been at the journey-level; or
- Journey-level membership in good standing in a recognized carpentry union such as the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America or similar, and one (1) year of full-time, paid experience in carpentry at the journey-level.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license, and acceptable driving record are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
