Public Health Sanitarians are charged with protecting and improving the health of residents by ensuring healthy and safe conditions at certain facilities. Danny Reis, a sanitarian at the Putnam County Department of Health, works in many of the Environmental Health programs and is always willing to lend a hand when it comes to departmentwide efforts. What is your favorite part of working at the health department?

The connections and friendships I have made with residents, operators, and my colleagues.

Is there a particularly rewarding experience you’d like to share?

Every chance I get to provide guidance and/or assistance to an operator, or a resident of this county, is rewarding.

What does your day-to-day work look like?

Each day at the Health Department is unique. It can go from investigating possible rabies exposures and inspecting food establishments, to flying a drone over lakes for Blue Green Algae surveillance and then assessing houses for lead-based paint hazards.

What do you wish the public knew about your job?

I wish the public knew that everything this Department does is to protect and improve the health of Putnam County residents.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Surround yourself with people that support you. 

What have been some of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your career?

The most important lesson I have learned in my career is that trustworthiness and respect are key to success. Being reliable and honest builds strong relationships and a positive reputation, while valuing and treating others with dignity encourages a productive and cooperative work environment.
