Private Well PFAS Testing and Rebate Pilot Launched by New York State

18 March 2026

Putnam County residents who rely on private wells now can apply for free well water testing for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The New York State Private Well PFAS Testing and Mitigation Rebate Pilot Program began accepting applications from Putnam County residents on March 9th. Residents who have PFAS levels above New York State drinking water standards are eligible to apply for a rebate up to $5,000 for installing an in-home treatment system or up to $10,000 for connecting to a public water supply.

More information about the program, including other participating counties as well as who can apply and how, can be found on the New York State Department of Health’s website at health.ny.gov/PrivateWellPFAS.
