Newburgh Man Convicted of Drug Sales, Endangering Welfare of a Child
CARMEL, NEW YORK – November 2, 2022 – Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy announced today that 26-year-old Malik Ellis, of Newburgh, was sentenced on Tuesday to five years in state prison with a post-release supervision period of two years after pleading guilty to Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Ellis was arrested on February 7, 2022, after a two-month investigation conducted by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Unit (NEU). He was charged with selling a quantity of Fentanyl on three separate occasions to a person working in conjunction with the NEU. The sales took place between December 2021 and February 2022. In addition, while housed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility awaiting trial, Investigators discovered that Ellis had solicited a minor with whom he had a prior relationship to perform an obscene sexual act. Ellis plead guilty on August 30, 2022.
The investigations were conducted and the arrests were made by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Unit and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Breanne Smith.
