PUTNAM COUNTY CLERK’S OFFICE Urges County Residents to be Aware of Deed Copy Scam Traveling Through County

04 December 2025

The Putnam County Clerk’s Office is urging all Putnam County residents to be very aware of private companies that mail letters to Putnam County residents informing them that for a fee, they will retrieve a certified copy of their deed and mail it back to them.

Putnam County Clerk Michael Bartolotti stated, “Anyone who receives any solicitation of this nature and has questions about their deed or any other document may contact me directly at 845-808-1142 extension 49301.  I cannot stress enough the fact that there is no reason to pay high fees to any company to obtain a copy of a deed or any other legal document.  It is the job of your county clerk to maintain your records in a safe and secure manner and to provide you with copies at a reasonable price.  Viewing public records is still free.”

There is no reason a Putnam County resident would need to reach out to a third party to obtain a certified copy of their deed.  The County Clerk’s Office routinely provide a certified copy of a person’s deed for a fee of $4.00 plus the cost of copying each page at $.50 cents per page.
