Retail Thief to Serve 2-4 Years in State Prison

16 April 2025

CARMEL, NEW YORK – April 16, 2025 – Putnam County District Attorney Robert V. Tendy announced that 38-year-old Tyrell Reynolds, of Manhattan, pled guilty on Tuesday, April 15th, to Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree.

On August 24, 2024, Putnam County Sheriff Deputies responded to Home Depot at 80 Independent Way in the Town of Southeast for a report of a larceny of multiple smart home thermostats valued at $3,956.61. Upon arriving at the scene, members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance videos which revealed the defendant took numerous smart thermostats, concealed them in a black bin and proceeded to walk out of the store. Once outside, the defendant was confronted by loss prevention staff, however the defendant fled the scene before Sheriff’s deputies could arrive.

After an extensive investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the defendant was located and apprehended. He will be sentenced on May 13, 2025, to a period of 2-4 years’ state prison.
“Retail thefts are becoming increasingly common in New York,” District Attorney Robert Tendy said, “and thieves are becoming more brazen in how much they steal and how they steal it. We won’t let this happen in Putnam County. If you get caught, you’re going to pay for it. We have to protect our local businesses.”

The case was investigated by Investigator Jeffrey Devolve of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mackenzie Ferguson.
