SANITATION AND MECHANIC FOREMAN
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is semi-skilled work involving responsibility for supervising and participating in the operations of a small sanitation department which includes materials pick up, site collection and material disposal activities. Additional responsibilities include the oversight and participation in maintenance and repair of sanitation equipment. Work is performed under direct supervisor of the Sanitation Administrator or other higher-level supervisor and in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations. Supervision is exercised over a small number of unskilled subordinate employees. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Leads and participates in the daily operation of sanitation collection;
- Maintains timesheet records;
- Sets daily tasks;
- Orders parts, materials and supplies;
- Arranges for the pickup of materials to and from collection sites;
- Performs manual work in the collection of sanitation;
- Leads and participates in the maintenance and repair tasks on trucks and equipment such as changing oil, plugs and points;
- Operates loading equipment;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision; good knowledge of management practices and principles; good knowledge of the town's geography; ability to make semi-skilled mechanical repairs to trucks and equipment; ability to organize and direct the work of others; numeric ability; integrity; good judgment; resourcefulness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One (1) year of hands-on sanitation experience and:
- Completion of a technical program in the automotive mechanical field and one (1) year of experience as a skilled trained automotive mechanic including one (1) year leading or directing a work crew; or
- Graduation from high school or its equivalent and two (2) years of experience as a skilled trained automotive mechanic including one (1) year leading or directing a work crew; or
- Three (3) years of experience as a skilled trained automotive mechanic including one (1) year leading or directing a work crew
