County Executive Kevin Byrne Promotes ‘Chief Daniel Nimham Day’ in Putnam with Proclamation
CARMEL, NY – Today Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne proclaimed August 29 as “Chief Daniel Nimham Day” in Putnam County. Raised in Fishkill, Nimham was a Wappinger Indian and sachem, or leader, to his people who died fighting alongside Continental Army forces in the Bronx in 1778. Byrne hosted an inaugural History Pavilion at the Putnam County Fair in late July where visitors could learn more about Chief Nimham and other Founders surrounded by local historical organizations and societies.
Putnam County is no stranger to recognizing Nimham’s accomplishments: a memorial was erected to the Wappinger leader at Veterans Memorial Park in Kent and the 1,054-acre Nimham Mountain Multiple Use Area, which includes Nimham Mountain, is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts in the Hudson Valley.
“Daniel Nimham was a diplomat-solider and an inspirational leader of the American Revolution whose ties to our region are a source of pride and lasting inspiration,” said Byrne. “Ahead of our nation’s 250th birthday next year, it’s important to remember the sacrifices of those like Chief Nimham who put themselves on the line for the cause of independence. For these reasons and more, Putnam County’s motto remains proudly ‘Where the country begins.’”
