Emergency Services Urges Residents to Take Precautions During Heat Advisory

14 July 2026

CARMEL, NY - The Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services is advising residents to take precautions as dangerously hot and humid conditions are expected across the region through Wednesday evening. Heat index values are expected to exceed 100 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations.

At this time, the Bureau of Emergency Services is actively monitoring weather conditions. While no significant impacts have been reported, residents are encouraged to remain aware of the forecast and take appropriate precautions.

"The safety of our residents is always our top priority," said Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne. "We encourage everyone to take this heat seriously by staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, and checking on neighbors, friends, and family members—especially seniors and those with medical conditions. A simple phone call or visit can make a tremendous difference."

Residents are encouraged to follow these safety recommendations:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., when temperatures are typically at their highest.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas.
  • Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.
  • If working outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks and stay hydrated.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If someone experiences confusion, loss of consciousness, or stops sweating despite high temperatures, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Older adults are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat. Many heat-related illnesses occur indoors where homes may not be adequately cooled.

Family members, neighbors, and caregivers are encouraged to:

  • Check on seniors at least twice daily.
  • Ensure they have access to air conditioning or a cool environment.
  • Encourage them to drink water regularly.
  • Verify that medications are not increasing sensitivity to heat by consulting healthcare providers when appropriate.

Residents without access to air conditioning should seek relief in public air-conditioned facilities whenever possible.
