AGING SERVICES WORKER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The incumbent of this position assists staff members in the Office for Senior Resources by performing supportive services relating to senior citizens' participation in various programs administered by the Office for Senior Resources, which may include the administration of the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP), as well as the Nutrition Program. Duties are carried out under the general supervision of a Senior Caseworker and the Deputy Director. Supervision may be exercised over Aging Services Aides. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Explains, informs and distributes material to individuals or groups (i.e. Senior Clubs) relative to resources, services and benefits offered by public and private agencies in the community;
- Works directly with senior citizens or their delegates to help identify and meet needs;
- Makes home visits when requested by senior citizen and reports to professional staff, if necessary;
- May review and verify financial eligibility information to determine and certify applicant eligibility for assistance under the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP), Nutrition Program or similar programs through client interview process;
- Interacts with HEAP Coordinator(s) and other County agencies in coordinating HEAP Program;
- Performs complete meals assessment of senior citizens referred to the Office for Senior Resources;
- Meets with Nutrition Program staff to discuss individual assessments;
- May provide escort service to senior citizens in need of transportation;
- Assists senior citizens in completing necessary forms required by the various programs;
- Assists in the development and conduct of training for employees and volunteers;
- Assists in maintaining communications between the Office for Senior Resources, senior citizens and other community organizations;
- Maintains accurate, updated records of all clients;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of community resources and organizations; ability to relate to and motivate senior citizens; working knowledge of eating habits and food interests of the elderly, ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with senior citizens, Office for Senior Resources staff and general public; ability to interpret agency programs and appropriate eligibility criteria and to relay information of these programs to senior citizens.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Associates degree; or
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma, and one (1) year of experience in a position supporting human services activities in a public or private agency; or
- Two (2) years experience in a position supporting human services activities in a public or private agency; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in a), b) and c) above.
PLEASE NOTE: Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
