MECHANIC/WELDER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is skilled work involving responsibility for the maintenance, upkeep and repair of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment, including but not limited to heavy duty vehicles, parts and auxiliary equipment. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway in planning the details of assignments. This work requires high-level mechanic and welding skills, and may require the operation of road maintenance equipment, snow-removal equipment or similar. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs skilled operations in repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel motor equipment such as trucks, tractors, graders, backhoes, snow-removal equipment, and mowers;
  • Repairs and replaces water and fuel pumps, generators, alternators, electrical and charging systems;
  • Repairs and overhauls ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches and axles;
  • Repairs and maintains auxiliary equipment on vehicles, including but not limited to graders, rollers, dump bodies, rakes;
  • Repairs and replaces snow-removal equipment, including but not limited to hydraulic pumps, hoses, steel lines, snow plow blades;
  • Fabricates, repairs, rebuilds and/or replaces broken and/or rusted equipment and parts of trucks, cars, graders, loaders, backhoes and mowers, including but not limited to dump bodies, frames, floors, body and cab mounts, garbage truck storage bins and rear stands;
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment that needs welding or repair;
  • Welds gasoline, diesel and water tanks;
  • Fabricates, reinforces, and upgrades vehicles and machinery equipment and parts, including but not limited to strengthening brackets, adding supports, repairing weak areas;
  • May operate road maintenance equipment to assist with snow plowing and removal, emergency tree removal, etc.;
  • May perform labor such as loading, driving, snow removal, as necessary;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS  Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; thorough knowledge of the common welding practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade; thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex construction equipment; working knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; ability to do brazing and welding with acetylene or electric equipment; ability to work from plans, specifications, sketches and verbal instructions; good motor, hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years of experience in journey-level welding as well as skilled automotive mechanical repair.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) valid in the State of New York, with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  2. Current Certified Welder (CW) card, which must include Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) supplements, issued by the American Welding Society (AWS).
