PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Work involves the performance of various types of maintenance work in connection with the upkeep of park grounds, park and recreations equipment, and parks and recreational facilities and/or buildings. Additional responsibilities may include interaction with the public, as well as patrolling the park during open hours. Work is performed under general supervision, with some leeway allowed for carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is not a requirement of this position, however, some incumbents may lead and participate depending upon assignment. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Performs basic groundskeeping tasks such as mowing lawns, pruning trees and shrubs, basic cultivation and care of flowers and other plants, keeping walks and paths clear, shoveling snow;
- Performs basic facilities/buildings upkeep tasks such as rough painting work, rough carpentry work, repair of fences, doors and windows;
- Performs minor mechanical maintenance and repair work such as adjusting and repairing power mowers, and other gardening tools;
- Cleans, maintains sanitary conditions, and replaces basic supplies such as paper towels and toilet tissue, for rest room buildings and park offices, including proper disposable of refuse and recyclables;
- Performs basic recreational facilities upkeep tasks such as clearing ice for ice skating, caring for playing fields, etc.;
- Assists the public by answering questions, providing maps, pamphlets and other informational materials, giving directions and other information, both in person and by telephone;
- Communicates and enforces park rules;
- Loads and unloads material and equipment from trucks;
- May assist with maintenance of camp facilities within park grounds;
- May check vehicle park passes or permits as necessary;
- May be required to operate automotive equipment such as trucks and/or multi-activity passenger vans or buses;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of buildings and grounds maintenance and repair practices; working knowledge of common practices, tools, terminologies and accident precautions of standard trades; ability to follow simple oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain good communication with the public; willingness to do routine manual work; mechanical aptitude; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; tact and courtesy.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and one (1) year experience in grounds and building maintenance work; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR SEASONAL APPOINTMENT:
Adequate experience in grounds, building and/or park maintenance activities, as determined by the Recreation Director or other Town authority.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, and acceptable driving record, are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
