Peter Ruisi learned about paintball after graduating from Syracuse University with an engineering degree in 1987.
Paintball was a relatively new sport, but Ruisi was intrigued. He traveled to a venue in Connecticut to try it. Ruisi fell in love with the game and felt he could offer a better option to play the sport.
Liberty Paintball was born.
The facility, located in Patterson, has become one of the premier facilities in the Hudson Valley, specializing in paintball experiences for enthusiasts of all skill levels.
“I love it. When I go to work, my wife calls it my happy place,” said Ruisi, the owner of Liberty Paintball. “I am proud that it is community-oriented and family-friendly. It is perfect for young kids, families, and businesses.”
Ruisi opened Liberty Paintball in 1990 at his family’s summer home in scenic Liberty in Sullivan County. He moved the operation to Thunder Ridge Ski Area in 1998. Four years ago, Ruisi relocated Liberty Paintball across town on Route 311.
An engineer, Ruisi, spent the early days of his career working in New York City while building Liberty Paintball. One of the larger paintball facilities in the state; it features 17 different playing fields across approximately 150 acres of terrain.
Among other things, he has taken pride in designing some of the playing fields with Star Wars and World War I themes.
What began as a weekend adventure in Connecticut has turned into a bullseye career for Ruisi and a gem of a recreational facility for Putnam County.
