SENIOR PUBLIC HEALTH SANITARIAN

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS Work involves supervising and performing complex work in the application of the principles of the physical, biological and social sciences for the detection, evaluation, control and management of factors in the environment which influence health. Responsibilities include planning, supervising and implementing more than one environmental health program. Direct supervision is received from the Associate Public Health Sanitarians and/or higher-level Health Department administrators. Supervision is exercised over a number of public health protection employees. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES(Illustrative only)

  • Supervises Public Health Sanitarians responsible for all or part of one or more environmental health programs involving food service establishments, lead screening, private water supplies, private sewage disposal, rodent control, housing, bathing beaches and swimming pools, facilities for refuse disposal, x‑ray installations, temporary residences and summer camps;
  • Supervises and makes public health investigations as well as prepares reports and recommendations;
  • Studies present and proposed local regulations to determine conformity with the State Sanitary Code and confers with local officials regarding resolutions that do not conform;
  • Coordinates investigations of animal bites and may issue orders to collect specimens concerning rabies infections;
  • Trains Public Health Sanitarians and Public Health Technicians;
  • Advises Public Health Sanitarians on complaints received concerning the assigned program area;
  • Coordinate the investigation of food and water borne diseases reported by local hospitals, laboratories or health care facilities, and takes appropriate control measures;
  • Coordinates the environmental components of epidemiological investigations relating to food borne illness;
  • May serve as consultant to local jurisdictions involving discussions, instructions and demonstrations;
  • May teach sanitary food handling techniques to food service establishment personnel;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Thorough knowledge of environmental health principles, sanitation laws, regulations and modern inspection methods; good knowledge of natural science; good knowledge of mathematics; ability to inspect for and detect environmental health problems and hazards; ability to develop and maintain good public relations; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to explain legal provisions and environmental health practices; good professional judgment; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *

Bachelor’s degree with at least thirty (30) credit hours in natural sciences, of which no more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in applied sciences, and two (2) years of experience as a Public Health Sanitarian.

PLEASE NOTE:  Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Possession of a valid, unrestricted, appropriate level driver’s license, and acceptable driving record are required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
  2. Incumbents must have completed a public health training course approved by the NYSDOH prior to appointment.
  3. Certification as a New York State Food Service Inspection Officer II (FSIO II) is required at time of appointment.
  4. Incumbents must meet all qualifications and requirements of Public Health Sanitarian

Mission Statement
