SEWER INSPECTOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this position is responsible for inspection work in connection with the construction, maintenance and operation of sewers. Instructions are received from a higher level official, but work is independently planned and carried out to completion. Work is performed under general supervision. Performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)
- Inspects sewer lines relative to breaks, repairs and testing;
- Inspects new sewer installations for tightness of joints and pitch of pipe, type of materials used and method of installation;
- Inspects repair work on old sewer lines and the disconnection of lines, due to the condition or removal of buildings;
- Inspects asphalt work, excavation and backfilling of soil;
- Records location of bends in pipes and location of cleanouts;
- Keeps file records of dates and time of inspections;
- Updates public sewer maps showing new public installations;
- Prepares and submits reports concerning sewer applications and inspections;
- Investigates and reports on public complaints;
- Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of approved methods, techniques, and materials used in sewer installation and maintenance; good knowledge of sewer codes regulating the installation and maintenance of sewers; ability to read and interpret plans and specifications of sewer lines and systems; good judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
- Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and two (2) years of experience in sewer construction, maintenance or operation; or
- One (1) year of post high school course work in construction or mechanical technology, supplemented by one (1) year of experience in sewer construction, maintenance or operation; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in a) and b) above.
