Putnam County Completes Renovations at Board of Elections

04 September 2024

Carmel, NY – Carmel, NY – Last week, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne was joined by County Legislators, Board of Elections (BOE) Commissioners, and a large team of county employees to celebrate the completion of significant renovations at the Putnam County Board of Elections.

At a press conference unveiling the upgraded facility, County Executive Byrne highlighted the importance of the BOE’s mission and the County’s commitment to ensuring it has the resources necessary to maintain secure and efficient elections. “When I took office, I emphasized the need to professionalize and prioritize the core functions of our government,” said Byrne. “Few functions are more central to our democracy than the work of the Board of Elections. These renovations ensure our BOE is equipped to protect the integrity of our elections, which is vital to the fabric of our Constitutional Republic.”

The renovations were part of a broader initiative funded by the $2 million Facilities Improvement Fund created last year. With this funding, the County has already completed major improvements at the Koheler Senior Center, the 6N DPW Garage, and now, the Board of Elections.

Some of the key upgrades to the BOE facility include:

Exterior Improvements: A new roof, landscaping, and new siding replaced the outdated rusted metal façade, proper drainage to eliminate persistent flooding.
Interior Enhancements: The facility now boasts a new training room, modernized interiors, and upgraded security features.
Accessibility Improvements: An ADA-compliant sidewalk and ramp were added to ensure that the facility is accessible to all residents.
Security Upgrades: Thanks to the IT Department, the BOE building is now equipped with a series of security cameras to enhance election security.
New Signage: Updated easy to read sign for the public that continues to honor and bear the name of former Commissioner Bob Bennett (who’s widow and children attended the event).

Legislator Paul Jonke, Chairman of the Legislature, praised the project, stating, “This is more than just a facelift; it’s a fundamental improvement to a critical component of our local government. The Legislature is proud to have supported this initiative, which not only enhances the functionality of the BOE but also serves as a commitment to the voters of Putnam County. As we approach the next election, these upgrades ensure that our electoral process is both secure and accessible.”

Legislator Bill Gouldman who chaired the Physical Services Committee last year said, “The Board of Elections plays an essential role in our democratic process, and it’s imperative that they have the tools and facilities they need to perform their duties effectively. These renovations represent our collective commitment to election integrity and the trust that our residents place in us to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections. And for our employees in DPW and IT to get this project done before the November elections is quite a feat. They have my thanks.”

Legislator Greg Ellner, the current Chair of the Physical Services Committee said, “These upgrades are not just about bricks and mortar; they’re about trust. Our community deserves to know that their votes are protected, that their voices will be heard, and that our election system is resilient against any challenges. The completion of this project is a testament to the County’s commitment to these values. Thank you County Executive Byrne, Commissioner Feighery and hardworking men and women of DPW for completing this project.”

Legislator Nancy Montgomery stated, “The improvements made to the BOE are a crucial step in ensuring that our electoral system is safeguarded. This project sends a clear message that we are dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy and ensuring that every resident of Putnam County can have confidence in the election process. Thank you to all the hard working DPW crews and IT Department employees who made this possible, and to the County Executive for prioritizing infrastructure investments. These efforts not only make our buildings more accessible to the public but also provide a healthier work environment for county employees.”

Commissioner Kelly Primavera added, “The improvements made to our facility are not just about aesthetics; they’re about creating an environment where our staff can perform their duties with the utmost efficiency and security. As we prepare for the upcoming elections, I’m confident that these changes will enable us to meet the challenges ahead and continue to uphold the integrity of our election process.”

Commissioner Catherine Croft stated, “It was special to have the Bennett family here to witness the unveiling of the upgrades. These renovations have truly transformed our workspace into a modern facility that reflects the seriousness and importance of the work we do. With these upgrades, we’re better equipped to serve the voters of Putnam County and ensure that every election is conducted with the highest standards of security and transparency.”

The completion of these renovations comes just in time for the 2024 Presidential Election, ensuring that the Board of Elections and the incredible public servants there are fully prepared to handle what is expected to be a highly active election season.  As the County looks ahead to the upcoming election, the renovated Board of Elections facility stands as a testament to Putnam County’s dedication to maintaining secure, fair, and transparent elections for all its residents.
