Pataki, Whipple Chair Revolutionary Putnam County 250th Celebration Committee, Planning Underway with County
CARMEL, NY – In preparation for the upcoming 250th anniversary of American Independence, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne, County Tourism Director Tara Keegan, and County Historian Jennifer Cassidy met with former New York Governor George Pataki, local philanthropist George Whipple, and Board President of Putnam History Museum Mark Forlow, to begin planning for “Revolutionary Putnam County 250.” This initiative will commemorate America’s founding with a series of educational and celebratory events across the county.
Governor Pataki and George Whipple, both longtime residents and advocates for Putnam County, have agreed to serve as volunteer co-chairs of the Revolutionary Putnam County Committee. Their leadership will help shape an exciting lineup of historical programs and celebrations leading up to the nation’s Semiquincentennial in 2026.
“The story of our nation’s independence is deeply intertwined with Putnam County’s history, and it’s an honor to work alongside Governor Pataki, George Whipple, and our County Historian Jennifer Cassidy to bring this anniversary to life,” said County Executive Byrne. “We want to make sure the past isn’t just remembered but experienced in a meaningful way by our residents and visitors.”
George Whipple expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of keeping history alive. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engage our community in the story of our nation’s founding,” said Whipple. “Through education, reenactments, and celebrations, we will bring the spirit of 1776 to life and ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the struggles and triumphs that shaped America.”
The planning meeting focused on upcoming events, including a dedicated Revolutionary War exhibition tent at the 2025 Putnam County Fair featuring reenactors, as well as a series of free public programs that will run through 2026. Additionally, discussions included the ongoing renovation of the historic Whipple-Feeley Chapel at Veterans Memorial Park and needed renovation of the Sybil Luddington statue in the hamlet of Carmel.
County Historian Jennifer Cassidy emphasized the importance of engaging the community in the celebration. “Putnam County played a vital role in the American Revolution, and we are excited to share that history through interactive experiences, educational programs, and special events. This is an opportunity to honor those who came before us and recognize their contributions to the freedoms we enjoy today.”
The Revolutionary Putnam County 250 initiative will culminate in a grand celebration on the Fourth of July in 2026, with events designed to bring history to life for all generations. Additional details and announcements will be shared as planning progresses.
