02 June 2026

CARMEL, NY - Putnam County will step back in time this weekend as “Putnam County Heroes: Battle the Redcoats” comes to Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel on Saturday, June 6, offering residents and visitors an immersive Revolutionary War living history experience as part of America’s 250th anniversary commemoration.

The free, family-friendly event will feature Revolutionary War battle reenactments, military encampments, historical demonstrations, live performances, food vendors, children’s activities, and appearances by General George Washington and colonial-era reenactors throughout the day.

Hosted at Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park, the event is part of Putnam County’s ongoing Revolutionary Putnam County initiative honoring the County’s critical role during the American Revolution and preserving the stories of local patriots whose bravery helped shape the nation.

“Putnam County played a significant role in America’s fight for independence, and this event is an exciting opportunity for residents and families to experience that history firsthand,” said Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne. “As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we are proud to honor the heroes of the Hudson Highlands and bring Revolutionary-era history to life right here in Putnam County.”

County Executive Byrne also thanked the event’s organizing committee chairs — George Whipple III, former Governor George Pataki, and Putnam County Historian Jennifer Cassidy — for their dedication and hard work in helping bring the event to life.

“This event would not be possible without the tremendous effort and passion of the committee, our county employees, and volunteers who have been working tirelessly to create a truly special experience for our community,” Byrne said.

Opening ceremonies begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature the Brewster Color Guard, performances by the West Point Band’s field music group “The Hellcats,” the Carmel High School Choir, historical presentations, and remarks from County Executive Byrne and Governor Pataki.

Throughout the day, attendees will be able to explore authentic military camps, interact with historical interpreters and artisans, watch blacksmithing and woodworking demonstrations, meet authors and historians, enjoy colonial games and scavenger hunts, and witness cannon firings and tactical battle demonstrations.

Featured performances and presentations include:
• “Tales of Revolutionary Hudson Valley” by master storyteller Jonathan Kruk
• A reenactment vignette about Revolutionary War spy Enoch Crosby
• “The Capture of Major André” theatrical presentation
• Military drills by American and British troops
• A Revolutionary War parade and troop inspection by General George Washington

The event will also include historical exhibits, quilting and crafts demonstrations, colonial children’s activities, live music, food vendors, and educational programming from local historical organizations and living history groups.

Veterans Memorial Park is located at 201 Gipsy Trail Road in Carmel. Public parking will be available onsite.

The event is free and open to the public. Activities and schedule are subject to change without notice.

Welcome Message

“Remember that Putnam County is home. Regardless of what may make us different as individuals, it is our respect for each-other as neighbors, our desire to step up and serve, to lend a hand, and leave this beautiful county better off than we found it. That is what makes this place so special. It is with that in mind that we as a county government are here to serve, and will always serve, with a desire to do better.” - Kevin M.
