Putnam County Offers Community Gardening Plots for Rent at Tilly Foster Farm
CARMEL, NY – Putnam County is once again offering local residents the opportunity to rent plots in the Tilly Foster Farm Community Garden, providing a unique space for families and individuals to grow their own fresh, organic produce in a supportive and environmentally friendly setting. These gardens are just another highlight of Putnam County supporting local agriculture and healthy living.
Located in the town of Southeast at Putnam County’s Tilly Foster Farm Conservation Area, the Community Garden follows organic gardening principles and offers a welcoming environment for both experienced and novice gardeners. Participants not only cultivate their own food but also form strong connections with fellow gardeners, sharing techniques and experiences throughout the growing season. The Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners maintain a demonstration garden on-site and are available to provide guidance and advice to participants.
“The Tilly Foster Farm Community Garden is a fantastic opportunity for residents to embrace sustainable gardening, connect with nature, and cultivate their own fresh produce,” said County Executive Kevin Byrne. “Not only does this initiative promote self-sufficiency and healthy living, but it also fosters a strong sense of community among gardeners who share their knowledge and passion for growing.”
Putnam County's Deputy Commissioner of Parks, Chris Ruthven, also emphasized the benefits of the program, stating, "The Community Garden at Tilly Foster Farm provides a wonderful opportunity for residents to grow their own food while learning from one another and from expert gardeners. We are proud to offer this resource and encourage more people to take advantage of this great outdoor space."
Each plot is approximately 20ft x 20ft, with a rental cost of $40 for the first plot and an additional $35 for a second plot per household. The garden is fully enclosed with an 8-foot deer-proof fence and includes water spigots and composting areas throughout the site.
The garden is located on Prospect Hill Road in Brewster, across Route 312 from the main Tilly Foster Farm Campus. Those interested in renting a plot can contact the Putnam County Parks Office at 845-808-1994 or email
